Fences and Gates

Fences and Gates

Graham Contracting constructs fences and gates, including demolishing and clearing existing fences, setting posts, concrete nibs and mowing strips, and putting in framing and paneling.

Graham Contracting constructs new concrete works from scratch or replaces existing concrete. We do the entire job from excavation to concrete finishing and reinstatement of surrounds.

Gates

Gates can be made from the same materials as fences or something else again. Gates can swing open or slide, be a single or a matching double, or even split with a smaller personal gate opposite a larger vehicle gate. The type of post is important for gates, and whenever possible the gate post should not be connected to a timber fence as these will upset the gate latching as the fence expands and contracts with the seasons.

The gates can be installed with easy to use reliable latches that can be locked by keys, cabin hooks and drop pins to hold them open, and smooth hinges and wheels in the case of sliding gates.

Automation

Gate automation significantly enhances safety and security of a property by providing a barrier by way of the gate being kept closed. Automation is commonly installed for children and pet safety and where privacy and security are needed.

They are opened and closed by a small (key) remote kept in each vehicle and another in the house, and by a keypad on the gate post. Couriers can be provided with access by including the "pedestrian wide only" gate code when making an on-line order. Frequent visitors can also be provided with a remote or the PIN code.

When the safety beam is broken or an obstruction is sensed the automation will reverse and stop the gate.

Power is usually provided by cable running safe low voltage power from a plug-in adapter making its way along fences and under lawns and gardens. Solar panels can provide power where the gate is isolated.

The gate can open and close on its battery back-up during extended power cuts and the gates can simply be opened manually by a key switch.

Fences

We construct fences and retaining walls from timber materials, concrete and metal fences and retaining may have concrete nibs or mowing strips along the base, and the nib may be constructed high enough to form a retaining wall. Where there is a nib or mowing strip, a strip of ground is excavated, then post holes are dug into deep hard ground, and set into concrete. Framing is fixed to the posts and panels to the framing, and finally any capping is fitted to the posts and panels. Alternatively posts can be bolted to existing concrete such as a patio or driveway or an existing nbi/mowing strip.

Dressed Timber

Dressed timber makes stunning, natural fences and gates. It is an economical way of making a premium fence.

Horizontal Slat

Horizontal slats make fences and gates stand out on a property. They are popular as front fences and around decks and patios.

Corrugated and Ribbed Steel

Corrugated and ribbed steel fences and gates are clean, low maintenance and quietening. The steel is treated to prevent rust and the colour is baked on. The panels come in a variety of profiles. Traditional corrugated “iron” and TRS are popular. The panels can run vertically or horizontally and optionally framed in timber.

Security

Chain link and barbed wire are cheap and hardy and heavy duty tubular fences are an attractive alternative. Manual and automatic gates can match the fences.

Concrete

Solid concrete is excellent for low walls where it can also provide a mowing strip.

Rough Sawn Timber Paling

Rough-sawn timber fences are strong and come in a variety of profiles to best suit the customer and the site. They look good, left natural or stained, are strong and can take the knocks. Rough-sawn fences come in a variety of styles and can be made to match existing fences. The key to good rough-sawn fences are plenty of horizontal bracing rails and the palings fixed securely to prevent curling.

Aluminum Panel

Aluminium tongue and groove, slat and solid aluminium panel are in a class of their own for looks, longevity and quietening. Aluminium is inert, it doesn't corrode at all, it doesn't warp, the powder coating lasts.

Retaining Walls

Retaining Walls can create stunning looking terraces for a property. They can give properties the best of views and depth while at the same time level lawns and patios. Drainage is important because it keeps the ground stiff and extends the life of the wall as well as providing lawns and gardens with well drained soil.

A civil engineer design and/or building consent is required under certain conditions including supporting a driveway or building or being 1.5m or higher. and a safety fence is required where the wall is 1m or higher.

Vertical Screen

Vertical screen fences and gates look good and are secure, but have slight gaps to calm the wind and let light through. Screens are popular as front fences and around decks and patios.

Layered Acoustic

Layering and overlapping timber palings over each other on a concrete nib produces an attractive fence and gate making a property private and relatively quiet. While timber is usually dressed, rough-sawn is also an option.

Tubular (“wrought iron”)

Tubular fences are made from hollow tube and square section aluminium or steel to provide a traditional look. They are attractive, safe and transparent. Tubular fences and gates are popular for front fences and pool fences and gates. Off-the-shelf fence panels are economical and they also come in a wide variety of colours and custom profiles.

Timber

Timber retaining walls are constructed by firstly excavating a beam and setting timber poles in deep strong concrete, then horizontal timber boards and then the upper terrace filled and levelled.
